la Pavoni was founded in Milan, Italy by founder, Desiderio Pavoni. Pavoni had previously designed the world’s first espresso machine for a bar called “Ideale” in 1902. Beginning in 1905, and continuing for the next 52 years, the company progressed the world of commercial espresso with milestones such as spring pistons, horizontal boilers, and the separation of the groupheads from the physical boiler. In 1961, la Pavoni released the world’s first electric consumer espresso machine, and called it the “Europiccola”.
The Europiccola is a piece of Italian design history. The entire machine is plated in beautiful chrome, giving it a level of elegance that is unmatched. This machine has a tendency to create obsessive polishers out of it’s owners, and rightfully so. The design has remained relatively unchanged since 1961, offering a glimpse into the early world of specialty coffee. It has been referred to as the “Lamborghini” of espresso machines, and clearly stands in a class of it’s own. With beauty, however, did not come compromise in quality. The average lifespan of a well maintained Europiccola is 20 years with daily use, partly due to the fact that the machine itself is built with 14 pounds of chrome, nickel, brass, and stainless steel.
In the hand’s of a skilled Barista, the la Pavoni can consistently produce unmatchable shots. The boiler features internal automatic temperature adjustments to ensure the water is always at the perfect extraction temperature. The boiler, portalfilter and grouphead, the filter basket are all solid metal, ensuring a consistent temperature all the way to the spout. The steam wand, and bonus automatic milk frother, enable the Barista to create exceptional micro-foam, suitable for latte art.
As with any lever espresso machine, there is a steep learning curve. This is not a machine for quick morning fuel. This machine is meant to be a priceless tool in the hand of an artist. The manual lever adds substantially more variables to the already chaotic world of espresso. However, as any lever enthusiast will tell you, this added control becomes something you cannot live without. The lever provides instant feedback on the different variables that go into pulling the perfect shot, allowing a barista to learn immediately how factors such as grind, tamp, and pressure affect the resulting shot.
This machine is warrantied for 1 year against defects. We also can provide replacement parts and tune-up kits on request for our customers. If any major repairs need to take place past the initial warranty period, we can help you find a local repair shop that is licensed for la Pavoni products. It is very rare, however, for a well maintained machine to have any major issues in it’s lifespan.
